AS AN AMAZON ASSOCIATE I EARN FROM QUALIFYING PURCHASES
I searched for the perfect dress, stumbling upon this romantic little midi dress on Amazon. A couple of days prior to my cousin’s wedding, I started doubting my choice, because I didn’t know if I’d be underdressed, but decided I would just go with it because well, it was too late to change my mind.
As the much-anticipated day arrived, I walked into the beautiful venue, feeling pretty confident. As I scanned the cocktail area I realized that not just one, but several bridesmaids were wearing the same colored dress as mine or I as them!
The thought of blending into the bridal party like an accidental doppelgänger was a bit of a downer. I mean I suspected it would be the case, considering the season, but I convinced myself that they would probably be wearing a blush or maroon, despite the “rust” color being pretty common this season. With my impeccable fashion choice mirroring the bridesmaids (in sarcastic tone), I feared becoming a misplaced figure in the bride's carefully curated vision. I had a choice to make and I decided to embrace the coincidence and make the best of the situation. As I looked around, observing the love and joy radiating from the newlyweds and the guests, I realized the essence of the day was not confined to the colors within the room, but rather the celebration of love and unity and truly NOT ABOUT ME. As I mingled and danced, I remembered that true style doesn’t reside in the colors we wear, but in the confidence and grace with which we carry ourselves.
I was able to look past my initial wardrobe nightmare and turn it into an opportunity to connect, and even joke around with my family and friends about jumping in as a bridesmaid understudy if needed.
In the end, being a wedding guest was far more than showcasing my fashion choices. It was about honoring the love between two individuals and celebrating family. I left the wedding with fun memories, tired feet and a lasting reminder that when life presents us with a clash of colors, it is up to us to rewrite the narrative and make it our own. Note to self: Don’t get too caught up in your thoughts and insecurities, step outside of your head and look at the big picture.
